PPG Industries was founded in 1883 as the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co. The company's first plant, at Creighton, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh, was the first commercially successful plate glass factory in the United States.

The expertise of glass manufacturer PPG goes back to 1945 when the company introduced Twindow® insulating glass. With the post-war housing boom, PPG was positioned as a leader in the development and production of insulating glass.

As concern over energy costs and conservation became important in residential glass, development of Weatherpane® glass and Twindow® XI insulating glass units helped the company build a solid foundation in insulating glass construction.

In 1993, this development culminated in Intercept® insulating glass. Intercept’s “warm-edge” spacer, which has become an industry standard, keeps heat from traveling through the window, so homes feel more comfortable, winter and summer.
